I was minding my own business the other day, when I saw a tweet with a photo that made me do a double take. I immediately got googling, but actually didn’t need to because good old Google Reader already had what it was all about. So thanks to TARDIS Newsroom for posting the thing themselves, but with due respect to Karen Gillan and John Barrowman, they were not the reason for me to get all excited. Oh no – this was the reason.
Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy and Paul McGann in the same place at the same time on the same stage talking about the thing that combines all of them a role they share with Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant and Matt Smith. It is the role that caused such a fuss after it was last broadcast on regular British TV in the late 80’s that people got it resurrected 15 years later. It is the role that in 2013 will celebrate its 50 year anniversary. It is the role that has enamoured me for over 20 years. And for the first time ever, the surviving actors from the 1963-1989 run with the actor in the movie special have gathered together. The Queen’s Jubilee didn’t phase me, this event got me more excited than my six year old daughter celebrating her birthday with cakes, toys, cake, games, cake, friends and some more cake.
So whatever the BBC and/or Moffat does with the 50th anniversary, there will forever be etched in the memory of Dr. Who fans this meeting, this gathering of true heroes. And note how they all got on reasonably well, Tom wasn’t hogging things, Colin’s nature wasn’t overbearing, Paul got a word in, Peter was charming and Sylvester made us feel sorry for him for having no one to give him any word of encouragement/advice in taking on the role.
Of course I hope that all of these guys are actively involved in some way with whatever the celebrations, plans, storylines or whatever is in the pipeline for that 50th anniversary. If they’re not, at least there will always be this. Thanks to the people who put it together and made this guy a very happy man. Enjoy.
