Sometimes the phrase ‘they don’t make them like they used to’ is not a bad thing.
There is no doubt that Hulk Hogan is one of the biggest deals to happen in wrestling since it began. The man was phenomenally huge in his hey-day and did more than any individual to give wrestling a big name. That doesn’t mean I like the guy either as a wrestler or a personality. Just consider how huge he is in this feud. Meanwhile Macho Man Randy Savage wasn’t going to get much better than this afterwards – it was probably as good as it got for him, which is a pity, because you can tell he had something about him that you’d want to push to the moon. Yet he just so happened to have been around at the same time as the Hulkster.
It made sense then to put the two in a feud, and with the recent news that The Rock and John Cena are set to face off in next year’s WrestleMania, it’s the first time that a match will be deliberately built up over a year, but what this package does well is show how the Savage/Hogan feud built up over the year. Some of the performances are a bit contrived, but you can see how it was so appealing back in the day.
So that’s what Rock-Cena has to live up to in the run up to April 1 2012 in Miami. We shall see how that goes. Enjoy.
