Nexus, The Immortals and Fortune are all current efforts from WWE and TNA in presenting a group of wrestlers who present a ‘force to be reckoned with’ in their respective shows. In the not too distant past we also had Evolution, The Main Event Mafia, The Legacy and The Spirit Squad (OK that was a bad example).
Factions are not new to wrestling and there’s a good argument to say that The Four Horsemen especially featuring Ric Flair, Ole and Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard were the significant forerunners and role-models of the concept. Some would suggest the D-Generation X were a good example of this as well.
Yet I struggle to see a storyline and a group that at it’s peak could top the achievement of The nWo. They just caught the crest of a wave and knew how to ride it however briefly. It ended shabbily, there’s no doubt about that, the WCW run got bloated, complacent and self-defeating and the WWF run was just silly almost as if Vince wanted to resurrect it to bury it good and proper. That doesn’t cloud the fact that for those few all too brief moments Hogan, Nash and Hall created that genie in the bottle of a wrestling gimmick that few if any can ever truly compete with. Enjoy.
