Covering Marvin Gaye is tricky territory. Tricky because Gaye’s style and manner can be somewhat intimidating to contemplate covering, even if it’s meant to be a tribute. At his best vocally and creatively Gaye was virtually unparalleled in talent. Thankfully no one has ever really made a bid to ‘succeed’ Gaye in his accomplishments and style.
So coming across McDonald’s efforts reassures me that he knows his limitations and just plays to his own strengths which are considerable. In such a way his version fits well into the tribute nature of some cover versions and I enjoy this cover.
